FOREWORD Coming up with a meaningful, imaginative, and provocative title for a book is a daunting task. The possibilities are staggering to consider. Although I had a number of terrific titles along the way, I left my decision to the very end of the writing process. I believe my choice captures a philosophy of living which Donna, and I aspire to.
As we travel together through our journey of life, on paths built upon a strong tradition and heritage of family and religious training, we’ve always had a sense in our hearts that there was something more. We’ve always been well aware there’s an obvious sense of security attached to familiarity, just as the tranquility of a comfort zone has definite appeal.
And yet, the magnetic draw of possibilities beyond the confines of our sandbox is very attractive and tempting. The lure of “what’s next” is an ever-present reality that challenges our desire for stability. Itchy feet? Maybe that’s it. Is it that it’s against the grain? Out in left field? Take you’re pick. Donna and I have felt it.
We’ve had many discussions about our apparent problem and resolve it by being more than happy with our progression to expand our horizons. I’m not just talking about where we live, what we drive, or where we work. The spirit of adventure has also hit us hard between the eyes concerning our beliefs. Our theology has been shaken to its core.
Perhaps you’ve heard the glorious voice of Barbra Streisand sing an inspiring piece of work entitled “A Piece of Sky.” To me it’s the signature song in that marvelous movie called “Yentl.” It’s actually a declaration about the “more” in life many of us crave. Find the words and read the challenging expressions of a poet on a search.
Sometimes it’s safer to keep our feet planted on the ground in spite of the fact dangers lurk close by. Memories often tug at our shirtsleeve to prevent the urge to step off the curbs of life. But, who has bewitched us into thinking that we’re only entitled to a piece of sky? Who has quashed our vision to dare?
Indeed, the more we learn the more we find out we don’t really know. The more we read comes the realization more has been written for us to enjoy. The more we travel the more we need to update the GPS to navigate roads of discovery. Therein lies our quest to flap the wings of adventure and soar to heights beyond our wildest imaginations.
I’m convinced most of the religious training of the past and present has wittingly and tragically allowed pilgrims to see a mere piece of the sky through stained glass peep holes in our spiritual structures. It isn’t until we step outside that we catch a glimpse of the immense scope of the heart of God for all. Out from cloistered walls you’re about to discover you’re no longer gazing at just a piece of sky, you’re getting a magnificent view of a heaven of possibilities.
The parables you’re about to read are laced with the reality there’s much more to sink our teeth into than we’ve come to believe in. The parables are a colossal collection of illustrations of God’s desire and blessing for His creation. The parables are a revelation of the very heart of God, a strong depiction of His limitless love, His amazing grace, and His mercy beyond compare. The parables are a recording of God’s intention and invitation for His children to enjoy the abundance and liberty in the Kingdom of God He desires for us.
“Papa, I can hear ya, I can see ya, I can feel ya.”
“Hey, papa, just watch me fly!”
Dare with me to spread your wings and soar...
