About the Author
Tom Hipps was born March 15, 1935, in the town of Deering, Missouri. The son of a sharecrop farmer, he grew up near Florence, Alabama, graduating from Rogers High School in 1954. He then attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee, earning the B.A. degree in the spring of 1958. Following graduation, he went to New Jersey to teach and has also taught in Tennessee and Pennsylvania. During the 1971-1972 school year, Hipps served as the Poet-in-Residence in Weakley County, Tennessee in the "Poet in the Schools" program sponsered by the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Bill Martin, nationally known lecturer and author with Holt, Rinehart, and Winston Company, describes Hipps' love poetry as: "delicate and beautiful..." Chuck Stone, of the Philadelphia Daily News, says of his poetry: "Much of it is witty and thought provocing...absolutely marvelous!"
