Charles Joyner is a Burroughs Distinguished Professor of Southern History and Culture at Coastal Carolina University. He is the author of Down by the Riverside: A South Caroline Slave Community (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1984) and Shared Traditions: Southern History and Folk Culture (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1999).

About the Author

Burgin Berry has interviewed people of the Grand Stand and other Carolina areas for more than fifty years. An early copy of it was placed in the Conway Library and many people requested that it be published. The South Carolina Historical Society reproduced an early version of it in microfiche.
