About the Book

On December 15, 1995 I had a major stroke. I was an engineer at General Electric one day, and a bed ridden invalid the next. This book shows the decisions I made during recovery that helped me get the best possible recovery.

When you have a bad stroke you wake up in a room, paralyzed on one side, unable to think coherently, and sure that your life is over. It is a depressing and demoralizing thought. It doesn’t have to be!

One of the key steps in recovering from a bad stroke is developing the right attitude to accept the situation and put in the work necessary to recover. Recovery is not made by resting in bed for a while as you would with a cold, it is made by working hard to reconnect the damaged pathways in your brain to the rest of your body. Once the stroke occurs the connection between your brain and the rest of your body is broken. Nothing will make new connections except hard work and dedication to a sensible plan of recovery.

Doctors will be aware of new techniques for recovery, but if you haven’t make the decision to make it back, you won’t have the attitude to win this fight, and it IS a fight! Dedicated hard work is critical for recovery.

About the Author

I have bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry, and an MBA. I was with General Electric Company for 27 years working in many different areas of the Lamp Division. For the last 10 years of my GE career I was a glass specialist solving glass problems in plants, and training others to do so. The glass class I taught was very highly regarded.

My career was cut short by the stroke. My experiences in recovery coupled with my teaching experiences are the motivation for this book.
