Snow was still falling at Albuquerque, Gallup, and Farmington. Heavy snow had started at Cortez. In less than three hours the Atlantic front would spill into the Great Basin, its wet winds mixing with the vanguard of the Pacific storm. A river of moisture was flowing through the sky. Its clouds would soon dam up to rise over the Wasatch against icy winds of the Canadian front. That cataclysmic encounter would center over a little ski town crammed with wall-to-wall visitors. Lucite would soon be lashed by the most dangerous storm in sixty years and folks there hadn’t a clue.
The ski lodges, always fully booked, were one worry. Those people ought to be evacuated before noon and brought to safety in Salt Lake. Leaving them there under the storm was asking for it, but the thousands of day skiers already heading up canyon road into the eye of the storm—that was a calamity. Either get them reversed and on their way home quickly or there would be hell to pay. Within the hour, Samantha must convince somebody with clout that what lay ahead for the Wasatch was something more than locally heavy snow.
