The Art and Science of Security is written to provide practical guidelines for individuals and institutions on how to protect themselves and their properties from being destroyed or lost because of the hazards caused by man and nature that surrounds them. Security is both a science and an art. It is a science because it is based on the laws of physical sciences and that its principles are based on logic. Moreover, a good many measures and methods of security are based on technology. It is also an art as it requires both creativity and resourcefulness to develop a security program that can address various and ever changing security conditions with the least inconvenience to those who are subject to it with the use of least amount of resources. What also makes it an art is that it is a challenge to justify the need for it when it has achieved its purpose and yet, any mishap that comes after that erases all that its has caused for one to achieve its objectives.The book has four sections. The first section deals with the security fundamentals. It provides a broad definition of security that can be applied to any kind of human endeavor. It defines the principles of security upon which all security methods are based. It covers the aspects or means of security, the applications of which constitute a thorough and seamless means for the protection of ones resources. It also states the three phases of the security functions cycle namely prevention, reaction and Investigation.This section also introduces the Stonewall Security Model. The Stonewall Security Model is a graphical illustration for a framework of a security program. It provides a universal symbol that defines security. The succeeding three sections of the book provide for the detail on how the principles and aspects of security are applied by an individual, to a home and to any instituion or organization. The second section provides for the details of the six aspects of security namely, Personnel Security, Information Security, Operations Security, Environment Security, Reputation Security and Physical Security. The third section provides for the details on the functions of a guard and its managemen, what they are, why they are necessary, how they are performed and recorded. The last section which deals with the applications shows how security interfaces with the more popular business concepts such as risk management, crisis management and business continuity.

About the Author
Joel Jesus M. Supan has twenty-five years experience in designing and implementing security programs for large organizations. Supan is a member of the Philippine Society for Industrial Security and the American Society for Industrial Security. He and his wife, Susan, have three sons and live in Manila, Philippines.
