This is the story of a Prussian Junker, Otto, a land-holding gentleman, who has to fight his inlaws to keep the land, which he came by through marriage. It's also the story of his daughter, Luise, and her interactions with the people on the estate, and her relationships with her parents. It also tells the story of Hildegard, Otto's wife, and how the expectations of the age have overwhelmed her and crushed her down to hiding in her rooms and concentrating on making hats that she never wears. This is what leads the book to be known as 'Prussian Yarns,' the first book of a series.

About the Book
