Retellings We seek, with an unfaltering constancy, And in it a desperate unfulfilling, Retellings of ourselves, in lovesongs past, Whose sometimes tawdry sentiments awaken a portion of loss, To come again; we know, with first purity, The intense, ephemeral present of spring, And, perhaps more, the golden lament of autumn. We see, in scenes holding an urgency, What was then too beautiful to know, Only to clasp it now, in a possessive newness, To nourish the day; anniversary and reunion, Returns and monuments, plaques and photographs Come to be charms that draw us as before, Yet, forgiving the malaise of growing awareness. Our reach is dressed in reverence, the retelling, Embellished and beautiful, but whose hues are quickly dry, And in this, of our tellings and their bittersweet joy, We weep into silence that hears and yet cannot comfort.

About the Book
When a fire burns into its ashes, only the fragrance of it is still left, together with the images of its passion, biding in smoke, billowing up, and into the away. Events do occur in our physical and emotional worlds, and these are, oftentimes, worthy of memories of them. In the years between spring of 1993 and the closing of 1999, a significant portion of my life burned away within the face of its circumstances—ashes left of physical and emotional properties—so that recording through hundreds of verses and colorful artistic expression were/are here gathered: the ashes with bittersweet, still-fragrant smoke lifting away of left passion. We cannot comfortably live in the past or the future but in the moment itself, composed of the ashes and continuing passion alongside the dreams and visions of tomorrow’s largess. We remember and we press forward as we, with gratitude, come to table of the feast of life through moments, often and long.
About the Author
Elizabeth Clayton began teaching at the age of twenty at the University of Southern Mississippi. Presently retired, she is spending her days reviewing and preparing her works for publication. Clayton has published ten to thirteen works (primarily poetry) since the release of her autobiography in 2007, which chronicles her struggles with Bipolar Disorder. In November, 2012. she was inducted into the Literary Hall of Fame, Sigma Kappa Delta, and nominated for the Eric Hoffer award by her publisher in early spring, 2013. She is also featured in the summer, 2013 quarter of Forward magazine, and her work, Scarlet Flow, was shown in the World Book fair, in London, England in early 2013. Additionaly, on January 5, and February 9, 2014, she was featured in the New York Times "New Voices, New Perscpectives" segment; her most recent work was published by Trafford in May 2014.
