About the Book

This is the story of the challenges experienced by people after slavery was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment. Some of it is historical, and some of it is fictional. You’ll meet Sam and Eliza as they make their way to freedom in the year 1865. You’ll find what it was like walking the Underground Railroad as families moved from the warm South to the bitter cold North. You’ll feel the joy of finally experiencing liberty.

About the Author

Margaret Peiffer worked for the federal government for thirty-three years in personnel management and retired in 1997. She started a second career that year as a volunteer at Queen of Apostles Catholic School as a reading specialist. She realized reading was the foundation to success in all the other subjects in school.
