“Oh well,” Tevin thought as he looked up and saw an enormous thunderstorm to the southwest of the playground. Tevin thought that thunderstorm was beautiful and he imagined being able to fly inside the storm. Tevin closed his eyes again but opened them when he heard a strange low rumbling sound but he couldn’t tell where it was coming from. “What is that?” Tevin wondered as he saw a bright flash of something appear to enter the top of the thunderstorm. Tevin did a double take at the thunderstorm and wondered if he was seeing things. Suddenly the entire storm cloud flared up with the brightest bluish-white light he had ever seen in his life.
“Whoa, that was bad ass,” Tevin thought as he swung higher. That got the attention of several students who began watching the storm as it sent out a low rumbling BOOM. Then another flash of bluish light seemed to emanate out from the storm in all directions at an incredible speed. Tevin felt the wind pick up sharply for a moment as the bluish wave of light approached, got closer, then was gone. The wind died back down but now little mini-flashes of bluish-white lightning appeared to be occurring all throughout the gigantic thunderstorm which looked to be about 40 or 50 miles away. But the sun was shining brightly and there were no clouds directly over the school playground so Tevin was sure he and the other students were safe. Several students continued to watch the storm with curiosity while others simply ignored it and continued playing. Tevin glanced over at Barry to see if he was watching because he knew Barry was a fan of weather phenomena. But Barry was in another world as he walked and held hands with Nikki and didn’t even seem to notice. Whenever a storm cloud of ANY kind was anywhere within sight of the playground, Barry was always the first kid to take notice. Barry had a puppy dog love look on his face as he chatted with Nikki and didn’t even give the storm a glance. Tevin snapped his head back to look at the storm again as it rumbled another low BOOM and then once again the entire storm flared up the brightest bluish-white almost as bright as the sun for a second.
“Oh man I can’t believe Barry is missing this,” Tevin said as several students remarked with “ooh’s” and “ah’s.” Tevin then heard another low rumble. BOOM…KA-BOOM. “Wow,” Tevin said as he glanced at Barry again who was still in lovey-dovey land. “Man love does funny things to people,” Tevin thought as he swung higher. When Tevin’s swing was high in the air all the way back, before he knew what hit him, he saw the brightest flash as if someone had shined a large spotlight an inch from his face. Tevin suddenly found himself lying flat on his back in the grass behind the playground and he couldn’t breathe. Tevin’s mind began racing a million miles an hour as he tried to figure out why the fuck his chest muscles wouldn’t move or any of the other muscles in his body. His whole body felt like it was on pins and needles like when one of his arms or legs goes numb. What the heck had just happened? Did someone shove him off the swing or something? One moment Tevin was happily swinging high and the next he is flat on his back on the lawn behind the playground. Tevin was looking straight up at the sky and couldn’t even move his head from side to side. All Tevin could do was blink his eyelids, swallow and open and close his mouth.
“Oh GOD, I HAVE to BREATHE or else I’ll DIE!” Tevin thought and was terrified as he yelled inside his mind for his chest muscles to MOVE. But they wouldn’t budge or even twitch. Tevin wanted to cry out and yell for help but it was as if a giant weight had been placed on his chest. Tevin swallowed hard and prayed a silent prayer asking God to deliver him from this horrible situation. Tears started to fall down the side of Tevin’s head as he realized he would never see or be able to hug his momma again. It had only been a few seconds since Tevin had been knocked on his back and he could already feel his mind slipping away and his lungs were starting to burn. Tevin couldn’t even gasp for air; all he could do was open his mouth as wide as he could in a last desperate attempt to struggle for a life giving breath. Tevin could also feel his pants were wet; he had urinated on himself and was loosing control of his bodily functions. Tevin was feeling more lightheaded as the seconds passed.
“Oh man this isn’t fair. I guess there will be no more ‘grass-HOPPAH’ for me,” Tevin thought as his vision slowly began to dim. But wait, Tevin suddenly heard voices nearby.
“Oh my God, TEVIN!” A girl yelled
“Somebody get the teacher!” A boy yelled.
“MRS. PATTERSON, Tevin just got hit by lightning; he’s dying! HE’S NOT BREATHING! Quick, we need to do mouth to mouth or he’ll suffocate! Tevin heard Brice yell at the top of his lungs.
“Christy, run to the office and tell them to get help!” Tevin heard Mrs. Patterson command. Tevin’s mind and body suddenly felt REALLY weird as if he were floating in the air and spinning in circles. Even the burning sensation in his lungs was slowly fading away and Tevin felt REALLY sleepy and felt unconsciousness quickly pulling his mind away. Images of his life began to flash through his mind at the speed of light. Tevin closed his eyes and decided to enjoy the last few images his oxygen starved brain would produce as death took hold on his body.
